Technology Description:
The Westport-Cycle is designed to obtain diesel-like torque and fuel efficiency with natural gas. A Westport-Cycle fuel system typically consists of fuel injectors, a natural gas fuel pump or compressor and electronic controls. Following the practice of all modern diesel engines, our injectors supply fuel directly into the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke, with fuel quantity and timing controlled electronically. A fuel pump or compressor delivers fuel from a storage container, or from a gas supply pipeline, and maintains a required constant supply pressure so that the fuel can be forced into the engine cylinder via the injector. Electronic controls manage the flow of fuel to the cylinder and provide information about the fuel system to the engine operator.
A Westport-Cycle fuel system also requires ignition assistance. This is because the hot compressed air of a diesel engine is not sufficient to ensure consistent ignition of natural gas, which has an higher ignition temperature than diesel fuel.
